N.E.A.T stands for

Non Exercise Activity Thermogenesis

Simply put, these are the calories your body burns every single day doing activity that is not exercise specific.

So going for a dedicated walk, or the gym, or for a swim is not NEAT (because that is actual planned exercise), but standing up, going up the stairs to the toilet, talking, anything like that is called NEAT.

The calories we burn from NEAT can make up around 30% of the calories we burn in a day, and as we all know, the more calories you burn, the bigger deficit you can create and the more weight you will lose.

People underestimate the importance of it, and how easy it actually is to increase it without realising, so the purpose of this post is to give you some ideas of how to burn more calories with some really simply NEAT hacks.

STANDING
Simply standing burns nearly twice as many calories as sitting, so at every opportunity get up on your feet

WALKING
Obvious I know, but walk everywhere you can, walking is an amazing calorie burner and if you swing your arms, even better

PARKING
Park further away from shop entrances etc. Just the extra distance will all add up to your daily calorie burn

TOILET
When you are at home, if you have a downstairs and upstairs toilet, always use the floor you are NOT on, forcing you to move more to get to it

REMOTE
Leave the remote next to the TV, get up to change channel/volume, then leave it by the TV and go sit down again

SHOPPING
Where possible use a basket not a trolley, and when you leave the shop carry your bag to the car instead of taking the trolley over

WASHING
Shower instead of a bath, standing up burns MORE calories

AT WORK
Set a repeating timer on your phone and every 5 minutes stand up for 1 minute

STAIRS
Always take the stairs instead of the lift where possible

DISHES
Washing the dishes instead of using a dishwasher can burn an extra 40 calories

You get the idea. Short and simple this week but I want you to think of ways to be able to simply MOVE MORE without it being actual exercise. With some simple hacks you can burn an extra 300 calories a day, and that is a LOT for most people.

Always think, in this situation, instead of looking for the simple or easy option, what can I do here to MOVE MORE

MOVE MORE = MORE CALORIES BURNED = MORE FAT LOSS (or more food).

It’s the little things in life!
